Why visit

The Catalan Pyrenees are the ultimate mountain escape: stone villages, alpine lakes, UNESCO Romanesque churches and ski resorts — all within a few hours of Barcelona or Lleida.

Overview

Aigüestortes National Park, the Vall de Boí Romanesque churches, ski resorts and the Val d'Aran's unique culture.

The Catalan Pyrenees are another country inside Catalunya. Here the air smells of grass, stone and wood smoke; the villages are small, with Romanesque bell towers and wooden balconies, and the landscape shifts with altitude: low pastures, beech woods, glacial lakes and bare summits above two thousand metres. For a first visit, pick a valley as a base: Val d'Aran in the north-west, with its own language and an Atlantic feel; the Cerdanya, open and bright with stone villages; or the Pallars, wild and quiet, home to Aigüestortes National Park and the Sant Maurici lake. Think in seasons: summer for walks and swims in mountain pools; autumn for fiery beech forests; winter for skiing; spring for melting snow and meadows in bloom. Don't promise yourself too many kilometres a day — the roads twist, the villages invite you to stop, and the whole point is not to hurry. Check schedules, access and weather on the official source before traveling.
